"you put your left foot in, you put your left foot out, you put your left foot in and you shake it all around" skylar sang as she moved the drama equipment to its designated location. she was currently in the theater, backstage to be more exact. she was kind of a drama queen--literally. she had enjoyed acting ever since she was in elementary school. she had even been in her kindergarten, third grade, and fifth grade play. of course, pretty much any child could get in those so skylar didn't feel like it was something to get really excited about even though she HAD received a trophy. anyways, once she went into middle school she continued to act but also began to help with props and it wasn't long before she became a techie. now what is a techie, you might ask? they were the people that helped with lighting, design, and all that pretty stuff that makes the play come alive. so each time that she was not cast in one of the plays, skylar would settle for being a techie. she did have a knack for it. which was why when skylar entered high school, she was immediately recruited to be a part of the techies instead of being a part of her fellow thespians. sure, she would still try out but it wasn't as if they would take her acting skills seriously. i mean she was doing the hokey pokey for crying out loud.
then again, alot of her drama friends were pretty random as well just not like skylar. see she was different in various ways the main way being that she acted like a child.... literally. she always had so much energy and if you ever got her mad enough then she would throw a temper tantrum which would include dropping to the ground and banging her hands against the floor. skylar would also get distracted easily which caused her to forget alot of things which is what led to her needing tutoring and many other special needs. she wasn't considered one of the special ed. kids though because she had not been like that before. she had actually been quite a nerd and a serious one at that. if someone were to compare her to how she was before, they wouldn't even think it was the same person. skylar would always dress in nice and prissy clothing. she would never yell and would never so much as ask a random stranger to play with her. then the shooting happened and celeste ended up in a coma and well skylar was never the same again. she became super happy all the time, up to the point where it would have sickened the old skylar. but skylar had a strange way of coping and this was it. she was different, though she still got mad that no one cared about the people who got hurt, just about the ones that died. so, this was getting into a really intense topic for the young girl so it would be best to focus on what skylar was doing at that moment.
skylar was putting away the stuff from last months play so that they could get set up for this years play. it wasn't a widely recognized play, just one that a senior had written. skylar didn't think it would be too good but as soon as she read the play, she was amazed by it. she had read it over and over and memorized each and every part. oh how she would have loved to play harriet melhart--the tortured artist who waited years for her husband to return only to find out that he died. although it sounded kind of depressing, the play had its funny moments, thirty of them to be exact. it basically told the story about the joys of living in the now which was exactly the kind of thing the school needed. skylar set down the last box and looked around before pulling out the skirt from her jeans. it had been folded up into a perfect square but the pages looked so worn out from the various amount of times that skylar turned them. she looked around once more before she began to read from the first scene. "it's been three years, and my richard has not returned mother. how do you expect me to feel! im sorry i'm not like you who moves from husband to husband every time she meets someone new..... oh how simple it would be to actually tell my mother that but she would killer me.... literally" skylar belted out. she continued with the next few lines, changing her voice each time a new character came into the scene. she was unaware that someone had entered the theater until she heard a cough

Nemo was never into theatre: no sir, no drama for him! Musicals? They were so... so gay! Plays? Oh, puh-lease, same as musicals, but with more crying and less music. Oh wait. No music! See? They were boring and pointless, stupid and a waste time. So why the fuck was Nemo heading toward the theater?
Because rumor had it, there was a hot (but crazy) freshman working backstage. Nemo had been eating lunch, minding his own business and focusing on his PB&J, when two kids from his Algebra class started discussing the Frosh’s Hottest Girls; the guys themselves were sophomores, but had been held back a year in mathematics due to their lack of caring for the subject. It seemed they were always focused on other things—such as girls.
And now, they were yelling out names, rating them by their hotness, and deciding whether or not they’d “do her.” Nemo was curious; a teenage boy his age, hormones raging and eager for some female attention, would of course be interested. And so he leaned in further, almost sliding next to the two guys, listening in on their words of wisdom.
“Skylar Beaufort,” the guy on the right said. “She’s pretty cute.”
“Dude,” his friend opposite him said, “She’s friggin’ nuts.”
Their conversation went on to point out her flaws, but her good points too. Nemo had his ears wide open the whole time, deciding himself this girl was worth checking out. And when they finally disclosed where this Skylar may be (right now! at this very moment!) Nemo knew he had to check this girl out for himself.
“Phil said he heard singing in the theater,” the guy on the right said, “It’s probably her. I bet you she’s jacking off.”
Aha! Now Nemo knew where to find her, and so he hastily gathered up the scraps of his lunch, dumping them in the trash can. And he took off down the hall, eyes set on the two double doors that opened up to reveal rows of seats and of course, a tremendous stage. It was then Nemo realized how stupid his plan was: wait, was there even a plan? Nemo didn’t know why exactly he wanted to go to the theater; there was a girl, rumored to be good-looking, rumored to like masturbation just as much as he did, rumored to be just as quirky. But... what would Nemo do, in the situation where she talked to him? Say, “Hey, I have a nice dick, do you wanna suck it?” No. Nemo was too modest to say that.
But he continued onward anyway, and pushed through.the doors, and into the bitter coldness that was Carson High’s auditorium. And what was that he heard? Singing? It sounded like—it was familiar, something Nemo knew, but he couldn’t put his finger on it. Oh wait! Was it the fucking Hokey Pokey?
Nemo fought back laughter, and found it absurd someone would be willing to sing it with such determination and focus. But he couldn’t identify where exactly the singing was coming from; the stage was empty, no one was sitting in the seats, and for the most part, the theater was dark. Not a soul was to be seen, and yet... the singing wore on, until it finally stopped. Then: silence. Nemo was curious.
He took a guess and decided it must have been coming from backstage. Where else could it be coming from? Nemo moved down the aisles and arrived at the door that led into the backstage area; trying the knob, he expected it to be locked, but had a brief moment of surprise when he found it opened easily. And so, Nemo let himself in, and found himself bathed in a bright light that differed greatly from the rest of the theater’s darkness.
He also found the source of the singing, but the girl who had been doing it was now giving a monologue.
The girl (who Nemo noticed, was pretty hot, and even boner-worthy) was reading from a script, and as her voice changed, Nemo realized it wasn’t a monologue, but an entire play. Nemo watched her for several minutes, noticing just how into the play the girl was and how she did not see him there, and decided this must have been the Skylar the two boys in the cafeteria were talking about. She was pretty attractive, but something about her just didn’t click.
Nemo was about to turn and leave when he bumped into a large box; instantly, dust blew up from beneath it and filled his lungs. Nemo, of course, could not handle such pollution and coughed once. A big cough; a hacking cough. But a single one, loud, and surely capable of interrupting the girl’s acting.

yes, skylar was an overall drama dork but she could not help it. she had a natural talent for acting, i mean look at how she acted now. sure, it was her way of dealing with the pain of losing celeste but she couldn't have done it just like that. acting like a child made everything so much easier and it made skylar's life a hell of a lot less stressful. that was what acting did for skylar, it made everything less stressful. all you had to do was act like someone you were not and everything fell into place. throwing herself into the character was simple, it was convincing others of her talent that was the hard part. sure, the acting like a child thing kept her together but it also stopped her from doing many of the things she loved such as getting a part in this play. they would be able to see that she could act but the people casting it would probably think that she was not able to handle such a responsibility. the fact that she was a freshman didn't help much either but was else could she do? i can't wait till im a senior skylar thought, but obviously she didn't actually mean it. being a senior to her mean that she had a year left of school which meant that her life would begin. then she realized that celeste would have been a senior if the shooting had not occurred. she stopped saying the lines for a moment even though she continued looking at the script. skylar didn't actually need it but she used it for dramatic effect. anyways, thoughts of celeste began clouding the young girl's mind. she would have started crying if it weren't for the fact that she forced herself not to. she did not want to continue beating herself up for what happened with celeste even if was nowhere near being her fault. but that was skylar, some how she found a way to place the blame on herself.
seeing as she wanted to get her mind of the celeste thing, skylar began to say her lines once more. acting came almost too easily with her. skylar allowed herself to stop between scenes to let giggles escape her mouth, the play while dark also had its dark humor that just made the young girl laugh more than ever before. one by one, the words came out of her mouth each other them perfectly acted out. skylar was sure that she could have made it through out the entire play if someone had not coughed. she quickly turned around, while stuffing the play into the pocket in the back of her shorts. her eyes met with another pair which seemed to be so familiar to the young girl. she was now face to face with a boy who looked about as young as her. he had light brown hair who was surrounded by a big blob of ...dirt? skylar noticed that there was a box next to him, the very box that no one moved because they honestly did not see a point in moving it. it had been there for as long as skylar could remember, which was a long time since she had come to the school for fun since she was a young girl. yes, she was pretty much a dork for doing that but she enjoyed coming here when her mother used to teach, before she hit the big time and stuff. okay, so her job wasn't that amazing but skylar thought it excelled to being a teacher. not that teachers were bad, she actually liked her teachers even if a few failed her because she had trouble concentrating but she was just getting off topic now. see what i mean about getting distracted easily? it was just something that happened to her. skylar believed she had ADHD but her parents just thought she was weird. either way, the girl had a concentration problem but she had another problem at hand. what in the world was this boy doing here?
he wasn't in drama that was for sure, or else skylar would have known him. i mean, he did look familiar but skylar couldn't put her finger on it. she didn't think about it any further because her curiosity got the better of her and she finally asked the question that she had been wanting to ask since she first noticed him. "want to practice with me" skylar said in that voice that sometimes drove people insane because it had such a childish quality. it was by now means annoying but it felt so weird having to come from a fifteen year old girl. then again, it was weird that she asked that instead of asking what the hell the boy was doing there or who the hell he was. then again, that was the normal question that skylar would have asked. she waited a couple of moment before taking the script out of her pocket and handing it to him. yes, skylar was absolutely horrendous when it came to waiting for answers but she thought this boy just wanted to be her friend. oh how wrong the young girl was. then again she was wrong about alot of things. her way of viewing things had much to do with that but there wasn't much she could do about it. "so what's your name?" skylar asked, realizing that she should have probably asked that first. like before, she didn't wait for his answer before she talked once more. "my name is skylar and i'm a freshman. are you a freshman too? you look like a freshman but i could be wrong. if i am im sorry, if im not then we can be fishie buddies" skylar rambled on. it didn't matter to her that the boy could have found her strange.

Wow, Nemo thought, This girl’s got a lot of nerve. That’s sexy.
And truth be told, her invitation to have him “practice” with her surprised him; most people didn’t start their conversations that way with Nemo. He was intent on rejecting her, however, for he hated the theatre with a passion and would rather see it burn in a fiery hell that contribute to it. But even before he could respond, the girl had moved on to ask for his name, and even before he could respond to that, she kept going on. And on. Nemo could have sworn his eyebrows were raising inches by the second as the girl confirmed that she was, indeed Skylar (and while Nemo thought she was cute, he realized now, the talking may be a negative aspect to her attractiveness). On and on, this girl went, identifying herself as a freshman and then asking if he was the same. And then she apologized if she was wrong, which she wasn’t, and Nemo kept trying to interrupt her to answer her questions. Which never happened, seeing as this girl seemed to last on one breath of air.
Then finally, she stopped. But her last remark made Nemo smile, her suggestion that they could be “fishie buddies,” and Nemo’s attitude towards Skylar lightened. “That’s cool,” he told her, “‘Cause my name’s Nemo.” He took a step towards her, emerging from the shadows, his smile broadening. And in the light, Nemo realized, she wasn’t sexy. She wasn’t breath-takingly gorgeous. But by God, she was adorable.
“We’ve probably seen each other before; I’m a freshman too. Maybe the orientation in August?” Aaaah, the orientation. What an experience. Three days of being lectured by the school faculty, getting to know your teachers and peers, blah blah blah. Of course, Nemo thought the purpose was to educate the kids on bullying and being good to yourselves and your classmates. It obviously had had something to do with the shooting, and while Nemo listened for a good ten minutes, he had eventually fallen asleep.
Nemo turned his attention to the play Skylar had been reciting. “What was that play you were reading?” he asked, gesturing to the back pocket of her shorts. Hmm, they were nice shorts. Short shorts. Showed enough skin, but that didn’t change Nemo’s opinion of her. Anyway! “I mean, I’m not interested in practicing with you... uh, sorry... but you sound pretty good. Do you take drama or something?”

it must have become pretty obvious that skylar was quite the chatterbox. what else would you expect from a child? still, the characteristic was one that wasn't praised by many, in fact she would annoy a load of people because she never gave them the chance to speak. yet skylar never thought about stopping, not once while she went on with her ramble, it was just the way she was and it wasn't that easy to change once you got used to it. it was a miracle that she stopped talking but it took her a while to realize that she wouldn't get many answers if she continued talking. so she waited... and waited... and waited for what seemed like an eternity even if had only been a minute and a half. the young girl was much too impatient for her own good which was why she talked so much. if she ever stopped and waited then she would get bored or distracted or a combination of the two of those. she honestly didn't know how she was able to pay attention in her classes for so long. anyways, a huge smile set across her lips when the boy responded. obviously, the girl knew that his name matched that of nemo from the movie finding nemo -- which was one of her favorites by the way. "oh my gosh! are you serious?! well you must be i mean that's a pretty weird thing to lie about. for sure we have to be fishie buddies now." skylar said, the smile still on her pink lips. skylar watched as he moved closer, realized that he did in fact look extremely familiar. then again everyone looked familiar to the young girl seeing as she'd gone to school with most of the people here for years. plus, it wasn't that of a town, or at least skylar didn't believe it was that big. then again, skylar had a different interpretation of what was big and what wasn't.
skylar got distracted for a moment thinking about what she considered to be big and small when she realized that he was still talking. now, skylar wasn't that rude, she still appeared to be paying attention to him, she got zoned out for approximately ten seconds. pretty much an eternity for the petite girl. luckily, skylar caught what he said before he even noticed that she had gone to her own universe. "hmm that's probably it! i was there with my brother the entire time but i saw EVERYONE" skylar exaggerated. well not really, considering the entire freshman population was forced to stay together for three days so they all saw each other at least once or twice. while most students complained, skylar actually enjoyed hearing about the school but she hated having to sit down for such a long time then leaving only to return the next day and do the same thing. "oh the play... it's called life's little wonders. pretty lame title if you ask me but the play is amazing" skylar said, dousing each and every word with her obvious excitement. yes, her love for drama was as apparent as her love for all childish things but she could not help it. a small frown tugged at the young girl's lips when she heard this. for a moment she thought about letting a few tears slide down her rosy cheeks but then he asked her about drama and skylar's world was right again. "yes.. well no... but yes. it's complicated. i have drama but i'm more of a techie even though i love to act" skylar explained.

Nemo had always been pretty observant. It was second nature to him. Whatever he looked at, whatever he heard, sunk into his brain and made his thoughts swirl. Nemo could catch on to the tiniest of traits that people had: he could tell almost instantly if someone was lying to him, or if someone was hiding someone. But he could also learn a lot about someone's personality in just one tiny conversation. It had to do with the way people talked, and this Skyler, the girl Nemo was confronting at this very moment, well, he could write a book about her. Here she was poring out so much information within minutes after he met her (was it possible to know someone liked drama? had a sibling? was an oddball? in only five minutes...?), and Nemo could tell she was a talker. But it amused him all the same. Chatterboxes were always fascinating people, and they really knew how to have a good time. One problem, though: you could never butt in. But Nemo didn't really care, and found himself liking Skylar. Confirming their status as "fishie buddies," Nemo had to smile in response.
Life's Little Wonders. Skylar told him the name of the play, and it was that. He would have quipped it was "gay," but the girl seemed a bit too innocent for slurs and other inappropriate comments. Taking her in now, Nemo realized if he had met her anywhere else, he would have thought she was younger. And she certainly act it. Her excitement and energy was usually only found in a child half his age, possibly even younger. Her voice returned to a more mature tone as she explained the play, and her views of drama. So she was a techie. Heh, Nemo thought to himself, Sounds like Trekkie. But he Skylar had not meant she was a fan of Star Trek and Nemo resisted the urge to bring it up.
He didn't know what to say after that. Nemo simply stood there, staring at Skylar, a weird smile on his face. He couldn't act perverted in front of her (he felt it was not right) but he didn't know what else to say. So he thought swiftly, and decided upon a compliment. "You should try out for a play or something. You're really good."
Benevolence at its finest.

okay, so even skylar had to admit that the play sounded a bit to happy. this coming from a girl who was happy all the time could basically tell you just how happy the play actually way. then one day when the drama teacher had been absent and the substitute was basically lost on what to do, skylar began reading the play. and it was easy to say she got really into it. enough that she was going to audition for the lead... maybe.... she still wasn't sure yet. she was afraid, a rather strange thing coming from the young girl. she remembered when she had showed her brother the play, he was quick to dub it gay and other words that skylar would never repeat--at least not out loud. no way, the young girl was too into her fantasy world that she did not find the words that came out of her brother's mouth to be appropriate in the slightest way. after all, her definition of a bad word included saying something like meanie-face or jerk. anyways, now she was just losing her train of thought like always.
she turned her attention to nemo once more, excited that he had not grown frustrated with her constant talking and distractions. not that she would mind in the slightest, she was already used to it by now. a deep blush set upon her cheeks when nemo told her that she was really good and like little girls always do, skylar giggled. okay, so she was not used to receiving compliments but skylar thought she took it pretty darn well. "thank you but i doubt i will get a minor speaking role.... they always choose the upperclassmen or the 'experienced' actors"skylar said rather bitterly, putting her fingers up when she said experienced. basically what she meant was that they picked people who sucked up or didn't act like she did. it wasn't her fault she suffered a major loss but like everything in her life, she just had to get through it with a smile. skylar looked at nemo once more and smiled. she was never good when it came to being friends with people her age for the reason that most of them were just as immature as she was, though they never really asked other pretty to play hide and seek with them.
nemo seemed different. unfortunately, skylar was not a good judge of character and saw the best in the worst people. "so what ARE you doing here?" skylar asked, the curiosity becoming more and more apparent in her voice. "not that i mind or anything it's just weird for someone who's not in drama to be here" skylar added.
