The cafeteria: one of the scariest places in all of high school. At least for some people. Ryan Jasmine Greene, was, unfortunately, one of those people. Being the new kid in high school had a lot of perks, and way more downsides. For one thing, there was no one to sit with at lunch. Sure, plenty of people had been nice and introduced themselves to Ryan, but all of them were already settled into their cliques, and Ryan just felt pretty awkward around all those people. It was a good thing that Ryan was fine to sit by herself, no matter how much of a loser she looked like in front of all these people. She was hoping someone, well really anyone, would come and sit with her. Loneliness was one of the worst feelings a girl could feel, especially in a scary place like the school cafeteria.
Ryan found an open table off to the windows in the cafeteria. At least this way, Ryan could look outside the window and watch what was going on in her surroundings. Outside seemed so much calmer and serene, while inside, the cafeteria reminded her of a jungle, or any other unknown, scary place. At least people watching was entertaining. Behind her, Ryan could see the typical, happy high school couple. They were sitting across from each other, holding hands and probably discussing their days. That was one of things Ryan wanted most. A guy she could call her own, one that would just be happy to hold hands with her, and she'd feel on top of the world in his arms. Unfortunately for Ryan, that guy didn't exist, and a part of her believe he never would. Ryan quickly shook the image out of her head, she hated thinking about relationships, it just made her feel even more alone. Turning her head, she noticed another typical high school group: the popular girls. They were all eating their small lunches, and laughing. They seemed so happy, and yet so terrible alone. Ryan far from pitied those girls. She had been popular once, but it just never worked out for her. She'd rather be the quiet girl with the real friends than the popular girl who has backstabbers, not friends. Finished her look around the cafeteria, she saw not much that was entertaining. She saw some kids painting themselves with sharpies, and others doing homework. Cafeteria's were never lacking in diversity, and at least that was interesting.
Ryan decided it would be a good idea to start eating her lunch, not that there was much to it. Ryan was never one for cafeteria food, so she had brought a salad from home. This way she knew what was in it, and didn't have to worry about something gross being in it, at one of her old schools, she had once found a small clump of hair in her food, and from that day on, she swore to never eat school food again. That is one of the few things Ryan has stuck to all this time. Ryan took out her tuber ware and a fork. Taking the lid off her salad, she began to play around with the lettuce. She did not know whether it was just a lack of hunger, or she just felt too alone to eat at this moment. The fork swirled around the lettuce, and only a few made their way up to her mouth as Ryan thought through her day at school. The classes she were taking were pretty easy, especially because the school wouldn't let her take a higher level math. The math she was taking at Carson was the same math she had taken last year in Phoenix. At least she didn't have to pay attention much, which left her to doodling in her notebook. Ryan wasn't the best artist in the world, but she wasn't terrible either. Drawing was just something to do, which sparked Ryan's idea to take out her notebook and doodle some more. This way she wouldn't have to just be sitting there at the table looking as awkward as possible for someone to notice her.
Ryan opened her smiley face covered back, and pulled out her hot pink doodle book. She flipped to an open page and began sketching one of the flower pots on the ledge outside the window where she sat. The flower was pretty intricate, and it took a lot of concentration for Ryan to get the angles just right. Somehow, lunch was looking up, even if no one had come over to join her.

It was probably the super fast metabolism of a growing boy, but Nemo would be lying if he said he didn’t love to eat, and so it was the truth when he said he adored lunch. Oh, come on. Food! Who doesn’t food? The warm, lusty aroma of freezer fries and soggy chicken patties... ooh, ¡delicioso! Nemo couldn’t wait to sink his teeth into a day-old chicken sandwich, sip his slightly spoiled chocolate milk, and an oily serving of steamed veggies. His mouth watered just thinking about the meal that awaited him, in fact... he could feel a slight tingle down below... was it actually possible to be turned on by the prospect of a meal—?
“What. The. Fuck.”
Nemo, who had been traveling down the halls of Carson High, stopped dead in his tracks as he entered the cafeteria. What was this? What the FUCK was this? Leading into the kitchen was a long line of students, waiting to be allowed in to get their share of food. And lucky him, the door was closed too! Nemo groaned loudly, realizing he’d have to wait half the period to get lunch, and so he decided it wasn’t worth standing in line the whole time. He’d just have to sit down and wait it out. But where?
Nemo was the type to keep to himself, but he didn’t like sitting alone. In a way, he supposed it was like reverse claustrophobia. He liked the feeling of closure and confinement. He liked being hidden. And whaddya know! Most tables were crowded, but there wasn’t enough space to fit him in. Nemo couldn’t help but feel slightly disappointed. Well, maybe things would clear up when the lunch line started moving... but for now, he needed a place to sit...
Towards the windows, Nemo spotted a reasonably empty table. And thinking wisely, he realized that in order to avoid a mad dash to the kitchen when it opened (and of course, being trampled), he ought to sit there. There was one occupant, a girl who’s face was covered by a cascade of hair, possibly her attention pointing towards something inside the curtain. Nemo doubted she would notice him, and so he came over, sitting down on the very edge of the bench, back to the girl and eyes focused on the kitchen door.
Hmmm. It was still closed. Stupid kitchen staff... what was the hold up? Some kid spill something? Food? Vomit? This sort of thing happened often, but Nemo never saw such a line wrapped around the lunch room, and he was starting to get pissed off. He was hungry! And the vending machines, usually filled with sugary goodies and fatty treats, were empty (probably because hungry people like him got to it first). So what could he do? Wait. Fucking A. Life wasn’t fair, was it?
Nemo’s stomach growled. Funny. He really was that hungry, wasn’t he? “It’s okay, stomach,” he murmured softly, as he patted his abdomen. Nemo felt foolish, but with hunger came boredom, and what else could he do? Ignore his complaining tummy? “I’ll feed you soon.”
But how soon was soon? Forever, most likely. Nemo supposed he could go off campus and buy something, but he was out of money for the week, and besides, by the time he got anywhere surely the kitchen would be open. So he would have to wait.
And waited, he did.

Ryan had become extremely engrossed in her flower portrait. Each detail she added was like another minute taken off of the time she had to feel humiliated by everyone around her, even if they didn't even notice her. It was oddly relaxing to be able to mold the flower on her paper. Each stroke of her pencil calmed her nerves, as each second raced by without anyone caring to join her. It was a hard life to be invisible. Unfortunately, Ryan could only hide from the hustle of the cafeteria for too long.
It seemed like only a matter of moments, but Ryan had pretty much finished her drawing of the flower. She could easily take out some colored pencils and add color and vibrancy to it, but she decided against it. With a sigh, she turned her head away from the windows, and looked up. To her surprise, a younger looking boy was sitting with his back turned, facing the kitchen. It was odd that someone would just come over and sit with her, without even acknowledging her. But then again, Ryan was pretty much invisible to anyone, especially those of the opposite gender.
Ryan could hear the boy murmuring something to himself. This kid was talking to his stomach. She couldn't help but be amused. The only person she had ever seen talk to their own stomach was her six year old sister. But then again, this kid probably had the mind of a six year old. He seemed to be pretty young, even if he was probably a freshman. But then again, none of that really mattered to her, she was desperate to make conversation with someone. It would be nice to not have to spend the whole period hiding in her drawings. For that reason, Ryan allowed a small, extremely quiet giggle escape her lips before addressing the matter at hand.
"Didn't your mother ever teach you not to ignore a girl?" she said with a sarcastic tone to her voice. The last thing Ryan wanted to do was scare this kid off. Even if he was younger, and slightly insane, he would be someone to talk to. Hopefully he was at least somewhat intelligent. "If you're going to join me, you might as well at least look at me," she said hoping he would turn around. As much as Ryan liked being alone, company was always welcomed. It was hard trying to fit into a new school, especially without having anyone to talk to. There was a small chance this guy was going to talk to her. Hopefully, he would at least be polite enough to say a few things to her before running off like most people. People tended to not appreciate Ryan's upbeat personality sometimes. She was almost always happy, and that scared a lot of people, especially in this school. Ryan had figured it was because of what had happened last year, but she tried to not let that into her head. She wanted to brighten people's day, but sadly, most people just brushed her off and told her to go away. It was a harsh reality to be in a place where she wasn't wanted. Ryan decided it would be best to not look too desperate for companionship. She took out a red colored pencil and started to fill in some of the flower petals' details. It was something to occupy her mind and her hands while she waited for this kid to answer her. STATUS doneyo! FEATURING nemo & ryan <3 WORD COUNT five eighty-eight NOTES i'm not so hungry. Nemo realized now the hunger in his stomach had evolved into actual pain, and he winced as this thought sunk into his mind. Shit. He hadn't eaten breakfast (what kid ate breakfast nowadays anyway?) and was cursing himself for at least not eating a bag of Doritos. It was only when his stomach rumbled again did Nemo realize someone was talking to him, and he cocked his head left and right before thinking to look behind him. And slowly, Nemo turned his head to the left and rotated his body one hundred and eighty degrees, to find himself into the eyes of a very attractive older girl. When she pestered him with a sarcastic, but innocent, question he couldn't help but smile. Oh yeah. An actual lady talking to him! If she wasn't looking, Nemo would have licked his palm and ran wet fingers through his hair. But his flowing thoughts missed her second sentence, and before he could even get an answer (or ask her to repeat what she had just said), her back was to him once more; this time, though, Nemo could see what she was doing. On a drawing pad resting on top of the table, was a sketch of a flower, and this girl was now coloring in the petals red. Hmmm. It reminded him of his mother, who had a garden back home in Tuscan. While her specialty was cacti, she was able to grow some dessert-tolerable flowers and when he was little, Nemo often helped her. But he didn't anymore, and he was able to admit he didn't really miss it, either. Yet Nemo still admired his mother for her efforts, and flowers in general was just a tender reminder of the woman Nemo loved the most.
So Nemo slid down the bench and found himself merrily inches away from the girl. He propped an elbow up on the table and laid his head against his palm. For several seconds, he watched her work, noticing how well she was able to stay in the lines. Nemo sucked at drawing, and coloring, and just about every major form of art. He was pretty good at needlepoint, but never again would he try doing it; it was just a one time thing encouraged by his grandma. Nevertheless, Nemo could see this girl was a good artist, and so he finally got the courage to talk to her. "You like to draw?" he asked innocently, eying the paper. He gave a bit of a nod, which was worthless (for he doubted the girl was looking), but he supposed it was for his own benefit. Come on! The boy was starving, and anything to take his mind off the hunger would help him. Nemo noticed a carton of lettuce leaves and realized this was her lunch: was she anorexic or something? He could say he didn't give much of a shit, but those crisp green leaves looked pretty tasty. Nemo licked his lips, thinking about the crunchiness of greens, and recalled fondly of the salads his aunt made. Oh, shit! They were the best! He was certain the girl's lunch couldn't compare, but he had to admit, he was tempted. So he took the plunge.
"Are you gonna eat that?" Nemo asked, pointing to the girl's uneaten salad.

As the boy turned around, Ryan noticed, out of the corner of her eye, that he looked somewhat familiar. It was as if she had seen him before, but she wasn't entirely sure where. It was odd, but then again a lot of things about this school brought odd things to her mind. Maybe it was the fact that every person she saw gave her the idea that there was a possibility she was related to them. It was hard for Ryan to not know whether or not her parents, her real parents, had ever had any other kids, and whether or not she had any other family in this town. She knew she shouldn't have even been thinking about them. She didn't even know if they still lived in this part of California, but Ryan was just yerning to know them. Even she did not know how strongly she wanted to find them.
Ryan glanced up from her book as the boy moved mere inches close to her. It felt odd to feel another person's body heat radiating agaisnt her. Sure, he was just some younger kid, but just the fact that another person wanted to be close to her made her a tad bit happier. Ryan did not exactly have the best track record with guys. Whenever she got close to a guy, too much of her pushed him away. Her fear of the unknown, her fear of getting hurt always got in the way of her being happy. Some people might think she's a little crazy, but it was just something inside her that made her push those she got close to away.
The kid talked, and Ryan snapped out of her trance. He had obviously noticed her drawing, and she felt oddly proud that someoone thought she was any good at it. "Uh, yeah. I'm not all that great though. Just some little sketches here and there. Mainly when I'm bored. It felt oddly easy to talk to this kid, even if she had no idea who he was. Ryan really was a socialable, likeable person, once you got to know her. She just wasn't all that great around strangers. Her fear of getting hurt kept her bottled up inside, not letting people in. Walls were easy for her to build up, and extremely difficult for others to break down. As Ryan looked at the boy, she noticed his eyes gazing into her salad. The kid was obviously hungry, which was made clear when he asked if she was going to finish her salad. She knew she wasn't going to eat it. She figured it might as well not go to waste. "I guess not, you want it? She asked as she pushed the bowl towards the kid. If she wasn't going to eat it, someone else might as well do it. She knew the salad was not that great, but it was better than nothing. Especially if he was really hungry, which his jitterinesss, and grumbling stomach proved him to be. Unless he was always that jittery, which made Ryan a little skeptical of spending time with him. "My name's Ryan by the way," she said flashing a warm smile in his direction. Being nice to people was Ryan's specialty. Even if most of the people around her were being mean to someone, she couldn't. Sure, she would joke around sarcastically, but she could never honestly be mean to someone. It was just completely and totally out of her nature. She was raised to be a good person, and she couldn't help it. Ryan just hoped this kid wasn't a complete idiot, it would be much easier to be nice to him that way. STATUS doneyo! As soon as the girl gave Nemo permission to steal her lunch, he grabbed the salad and began to dig in, using his fingers instead of a fork. Lettuce didn’t have much nutritional substance, but hey, it filled the emptiness of the stomach and satisfied Nemo’s hunger. Munching away on the greens, he looked at her once more, and found her... familiar. It was not only the way she held herself but also the way she looked; like he’d seen her before, but more in a picture, a very small picture. Yearbook photo, maybe? Nemo had grabbed hold of the year’s previous yearbook a few weeks ago, but that was only for seniors, so that meant no, he hadn’t seen this girl before in a book. So where? It was only when she said her name that it clicked.
“Wyanmph?” Nemo repeated, mouth full. He held up an index finger to signal he needed a moment, chewed quickly and swallowed, then took a breath. “Ryan? Haven’t we met... on the school’s chatroom?”
And Nemo’s solemn expression then morphed into a goofy smile, as he recalled his douchebaggery on the chatroom. He had been trolling, a passion of his, and he decided to take it closer to home. He hit on the girls, he insulted the guys, and he spammed and got himself blocked several times. That was Nemo’s idea of fun, but hey, it actually did pass the time and ease boredom. Nemo remembered Ryan from several sessions, and holding back laughter, he recognized her instantly: she was his “girlfriend.” Not really, of course, for she was older and didn’t like him back, but obviously she didn’t know who he was right now. The real Nemo, the smart one who and not the persona he held online, knew his chances with Ryan were slim, but hey, he could tell here in public that she was hot.
Nemo’s smile remained strange, but it became somewhat kinder, and maybe not as menacing. “Heh, I was the guy who claimed you my girlfriend,” and he showed some teeth, putting his hands up in an apologetic fashion. “Ummm, sorry for that. I was just trollin’... ya know, I was bored. I’m not actually an asshole in real life.”
It was half a lie, because in truth, Nemo could still be a bit of a schmuck at times. But in reality, he didn’t have as much nerve to go out and shout “PENIS!” as loudly as he can, and he was usually more tame, calmer and a lot sweeter, the boy his mother hoped he would be. That was what Nemo wanted Ryan to see now, that he was more than just a douche with a brown mop of hair; oh no, he wanted to let her know he was a total babe, and available here for her.

Ryan was slightly surprised at how quickly the boy snatched the salad away from him. He must have been hungrier than she thought he was. She couldn't help but notice how the boy was looking at her. it was as if, he too, saw something familiar in here. Hopefully this was not one of those deja vu moments and they find out they were married in another life or something. That would just be plain weird.
It was hard for Ryan not to laugh as the boy spoke with food in his mouth. She figured the mumble that came out of his mouth was her name, which he made clear when he cleared his mouth and spoke again. Oh. My. God. Ryan now realized why this boy looked familiar. The moment he said the word chat room, she knew exactly who he was. He was Nemo, probably one of the most annoying boys she had ever talked to. He was bothering everyone in the chat with his sex talk and who knows what else. Ryan had made it her job to be nice to him and make sure he did not get himself killed. She could not help being nice to people, and it came naturally. Everyone else in the chat had been ragging on Nemo and what not, and Ryan, although she had been extremely aggravated, but up with his nonsense and tried to at least be polite.
"Oh yeah. We have. its Nemo right?" Ryan said recalling their amusing chats. She could feel herself blushing as he spoke, reminding her of his behavior. There was a consequence for Ryan's politeness to the boy. Nemo had continually called Ryan his 'girlfriend' in the chat. She had put up with it, but it slightly bothered her. Maybe it was the fact that she has never actually been anyone girlfriend. It was just weird being called that by a stranger. At least the boy was being calm and collected now. He even managed to apologize for 'trolling' her. Ryan did not exactly knew what that meant, even though she heard it around in her old school all the time. A bit of uneasiness rose in Ryan stomach. She was not sure if the kid was being sincere or not. Sure, he seemed like a nice kid, but if he was anything in real life as he was in a chat room, it would be hard to handle his company for long periods of time. "Its okay, you were mildly entertaining. At least for the time being." she said letting a genuine smile form on her soft pinks lips. Although the boy had been annoying, it was amusing to watch how others reacted to his shenanigans. Ryan couldn't help but laugh as the boy explained himself, and the memories of the past few nights came back into her mind. As Ryan watched Nemo eat her unfinished salad, she could not help but think why this kid was so obnoxious. He wasn't terrible looking, so he must have some friends. Even if he was just a teeny tiny little freshman. But then again, he was eating the salad with his hands instead of the fork that was on the napkin next to Ryan. "That salad must have been better than I thought" she said in relation to the way he was eating it. "Why are you so hungry anyways?" Ryan was attempting to make somewhat of a conversation with this kid. He was her only lunch mate.
